What is American Studies?

American Studies at the Beach examines everyday American life, cultures, and struggles.

We interrogate and analyze notions of citizenship and belonging, vis-a-vis indigeneity, race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, disability, class, religion, and nation at various scales and through broad-ranging curriculum.

We cultivate critical thinking; collaboration; and oral, written, and applied competencies to promote knowledge, democratic inquiry, and social transformation on campus and in our communities.

We provide an undergraduate major and minor and serve the campus through our popular general education (GE) course offerings

Why Choose American Studies?

American Studies students receive a broad liberal arts education focusing on American culture. The major in American Studies offers a solid background for careers in law, journalism, public service, business, and education. The program also provides the foundation for graduate work in American Studies and related fields. In other words, the knowledge and skills our majors acquire prepares them to succeed in just about any field.
